- Shimonoseki's Maritime Heritage and the Art of Fugu: A Cultural and Culinary Journey

Experience plan overview
This plan lets you learn about the unique properties and history of Shimonoseki, which borders the Kanmon Straits, and the unique Japanese dining culture of fugu, as well as savor the most of Shunpanro's famous fugu full course meal. We have prepared original documents that compile the history of the Kanmon Straits, which saw many turning points throughout history, and the history of Akama-jingu Shrine, which overlooks the straits. Akama-jingu Shrine, a Registered Tangible Cultural Heritage Property of Japan, is an ancient shrine enshrining Emperor Antoku, who drowned at a young age during a battle that took place in the Kanmon Straits. It is also known around the world as the site of the Japanese ghost story Hoichi the Earless. It is a short walk from Shunpanro to the shrine, and you can use the documents to enjoy your visit at ease. Afterwards, you can return to your room and learn about the fugu dining culture and history from the staff, followed by the much awaited fugu meal. Highlights and Details of Each Plan
- The Skills of Artisans Passed Down the Generations
- A special license is required to carve fugu in Japan. In particular, fugu sashimi is a masterpiece backed by skilled craftsmanship. The highlights are the superb knife skills, making cuts so thin that the pattern on the plate can be seen through the fish, and the beautiful presentation. Due to the nature of fugu, its muscles are well developed and the meat is tough, making it extremely difficult to slice it as uniformly thin pieces. The artistic fugu sashimi of Shunpanro is a fabled traditional skill of the restaurant, made possible through careful preparation. By maturing it overnight using a secret recipe, the flesh becomes just the right firmness, bringing out the unique texture and flavor of fugu.
- Experience the History and Culture of Shimonoseki Plan A Only
- The Kanmon Straits is a key transportation hub that passes from the Sea of Japan to the Seto Inland Sea, and separates the it from the open sea. - Learn about Japan's Unique Dining Culture
- Japan's fugu cuisine has a long history stretching back to the Jomon period. There was a time when it was banned because it was highly poisonous, but its delicate flavor and beautiful presentation have captivated countless gourmets.
