Tales of Moraes' Tokushima: The Proprietress Shares Stories of Local History and Geisha Culture

Experience plan overview

In this plan, proprietress Shimada Yukari and staff introduce the history of Fuugai and Shimada, while Shimada's live-in geisha demonstrate their arts and hospitality through Japanese dance and shamisen performances. As in Plan A, you'll first learn about Wenceslau de Moraes, the Portuguese Consul General in Kobe and Osaka who introduced Tokushima's culture to the world. Following in the footsteps of Mr. Moraes, who was captivated by Tokushima, you'll experience Shimada's geisha culture firsthand.
Alongside exquisite kaiseki cuisine, you'll discover the world of traditional performing arts and geisha culture: Shimada's role in preserving the entertainment district's legacy, the geisha's daily-refined dance, their graceful movements and attentiveness, and their beautiful kimono and traditional makeup.

Highlights and Details of Each Plan

Experience Fuugai's Living Geisha CulturePlan B Only
Fuugai once flourished as Tokushima's premier entertainment district, with geisha so accomplished that students came from other prefectures for lessons. Today, Shimada's live-in geisha, including the young proprietress, maintain these traditions, welcoming guests with graceful movements in beautiful kimono. Their professional artistry, hospitality, and deportment continue to captivate guests from Japan and abroad.
Japanese Cuisine Using Tokushima's Bounty
Tokushima's ingredients, nurtured by the Seto Inland Sea, clear streams, and lush majestic lush landscapes, include exceptional products that fascinate chefs at traditional restaurants and eateries nationwide. Shimada luxuriously uses Tokushima's bounty, including local citrus fruits, seasonal vegetables, Tokushima's branded Awa beef, and sea bream and spiny lobster caught in the fast-flowing Naruto Strait. Skillful use of broth and traditional seasonings highlights the natural rich flavors of the ingredients.
