Begin in the tea room with Yamamoto's introduction to Japanese tea ceremonies, enjoying fresh wasanbon sugar and thin tea served in precious, museum-quality tea bowls. Yamamoto, well-versed in tea utensils and their history, shares fascinating insights throughout.
In Plan A, meet local storytellers who actively promote Kotohira town's Kanamaru-za, Japan's oldest existing playhouse. They'll share the history of both the Kotohira-gu Shrine, long revered as a sanctuary for seafaring deities, and Konpira Kabuki traditions. The experience concludes with an innovative plant-based kaiseki meal that has served international dignitaries, each dish beautifully presented like a work of art, full of surprises and wonder.

- In Nicho's nationally registered tea room, each ceremony begins with mindful preparation - seasonal flowers and carefully selected scrolls that convey the host's theme. This arrangement marks the beginning of tea ceremony hospitality. Master Yamamoto's collection showcases exceptional pieces, including a rare 450-year-old tea bowl, fourth-generation Raku works, and antique Satsuma and Setoguro pieces that command respect from art experts, each a historically significant masterpiece that astonishes even specialists.

- Nicho's kaiseki cuisine showcases masterful culinary expertise. The chef personally selects seasonal ingredients from local producers and uses traditionally crafted Japanese seasonings to create plant-based dishes with remarkable depth and satisfaction, achieved through innovative cooking techniques. Each artistic presentation captures seasonal transitions through delicate arrangements, reflecting both technical mastery and Japanese refinement.
- Meeting Kotohira's Cultural Storytellers Plan A Only
- Experience a special presentation about the Kanamaru-za (Former Konpira Grand Theater), a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, by one of two local experts: Mayor Kataoka Hideki, a kabuki enthusiast, or Ike Ryutaro, the 28th generation owner of Gonin-hyakusho*1 Ike Shop along Kotohira-gu Shrine's approach*2. Built in 1835, Kanamaru-za is Japan's oldest existing playhouse, hosting the Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Grand Performance in spring that draws fans nationwide. Either speaker will share their passion for kabuki, one of Japan's globally renowned traditional arts, through their enthusiastic presentation.
*1 Gonin-hyakusho refers to five hereditary families serving the deity of Kotohira-gu Shrine. These families have continued to assist with shrine rituals for generations.
*2 One speaker will be present; specific speaker depends on date of visit.
