- Gardens by Three Generations of Master Craftsmen and the World of Tea Ceremony

Experience plan overview
Experience Hanbe's signature garden and tea ceremony plan showcasing Japanese gardens crafted by three generations of the Shigemori family. Begin with our staff's introduction to Japanese aesthetics and natural views embodied within the gardens. Then explore at your leisure the distinctly styled gardens created by each generation. These gardens are designed not merely for viewing, but for discovery through meandering paths where you can find perfect "viewing spots" that capture the garden's essence. At our Koka-tei teahouse, experience the garden's beauty from a new perspective while participating in a traditional tea ceremony with matcha prepared by our staff. Complete your visit with seasonal kaiseki cuisine prepared by Contemporary Master Craftsman Chef Kawamura Mitsuru in your private room, where each dish resonates with the garden's seasonal beauty.

Highlights and Details of Each Plan
- The Living Aesthetics of Japanese Gardens
- At the heart of Japanese aesthetics lies the concept of "nature." Since ancient times, Japanese people have found profound beauty in the natural world. While Western gardens often emphasize bilateral symmetry, a pattern rarely found in nature, Japanese gardens are distinguished by their curved forms and asymmetrical designs. This reflects their fundamental principle of modeling natural landscapes and prioritizing harmony with nature. We invite you to experience the unique sensibility of Japanese aesthetics in the gardens of Hanbe.
- Gardens of a Preeminent Japanese Garden Master
- This garden was created by Shigemori Mirei, a master garden designer renowned for harmoniously blending tradition with modernity, as exemplified by his famous works like the Tofukuji Temple Hojo Garden and Komyoin Zen Temple Garden in Kyoto. He is accredited with designing more than 200 gardens throughout Japan. His eldest son, Kanto, and grandson Chisao have also become leading figures in Japanese garden design. It is extremely rare to find gardens created by three generations of the Shigemori family in one location, and the opportunity to appreciate the artistry of a traditional Japanese garden while enjoying fine cuisine is an experience unique to Hanbe.
- Tea Ceremony Experience Plan A Only
- Along with the appreciation of a traditional Japanese garden, Plan A also offers the opportunity to experience tea ceremony—one of Japan's traditional cultural arts. The grounds feature Koka-tei, an atmospheric tea house built during the Edo period where tea ceremonies continue to be held today. To deeply appreciate Japanese gardens, it's essential to understand other aspects of Japanese culture. The Japanese aesthetic sensibility, with its emphasis on harmony with nature and reverence for the seasons, is deeply woven into both garden design and the way of tea.
- Kaiseki Cuisine: A Five-Senses Journey Through Japan's Seasons
- Using seasonal ingredients from the Setouchi Island and carefully preserving the four seasons, the kaiseki cuisine is another reason why Hanbe is a renowned restaurant. Head Chef Kawamura Mitsuru, selected as a Contemporary Master Craftsman, is a skilled culinary artist. He personally goes to the mountains to gather decorative leaves to incorporate into his dishes and visits art museums on holidays to refine his sense of seasonal color for his craft. Please enjoy the essence of Japanese cuisine, featuring the excellent fresh seafood and seasonal vegetables from the Seto Inland Sea, presented in arrangements that reflect the seasonal atmosphere.
